I often recall my first time trying a cigarette. It was last April and I was at work trying to enjoy it and trying not to stress about my (now ex) girlfriend who was at the time probably plotting to bone what's-in-a-name. I always kind of thought of the guys at work as almost "brothers" in a way not only because of their support and willingness to listen to your shit filled daily existence, but also in that they had me trying new things. So that one day, nearly off of work, I go up to Joe and say a simple phrase.
"Dude, I'm just really fuckin' stressed right now. Give me something I don't care what."
Joe hands me a Malboro Red. I stare at it for a moment contemplating what's in front of me. Like most children, schools beat the idea of "NO SMOKING" in your head for pretty much half a semester per year. If you're parents have any sense of decent parenthood, they'll beat the idea in your head too. But none of that really mattered at the time. All that mattered was that my girlfriend was a lying piece of shit, school was overbearing and pointless, work was a drag, humanity is still failing, and damned if I didn't get enough sleep the night before.
Two seconds.
