Exhaustion

untitled
The tree’s boughs hung low,
fighting the urge to rest upon the ground.
Its leaves browned and curling,
tucking themselves in to sleep.
Gray clouds kept watch overhead;
like patient parents waiting for
its child to drift to dreams.
From the northwest, the wind
biting towards and whipping around
the drooping veteran’s arms.
A battered body,
with a passive trust lets go
of its folliage
under a forceful gust.
The bruised branches swayed and
bent with defeat
until the leaves floated to earth
stacking on top
and beside each other,
a quilt of fallen brothers.
A bare frame remained; a skeleton of
a passing season.
