Emo / Goth Showdown

untitled

I walked through the star-studded gates towards the concert my friends' band, Harlots of Crossfire, would be playing at. The moment we walked in, we were overwhelmed with the pungent aroma of tobacco, the energy of depression and the brisk air surrounding us. The grass would soon begin collecting dew. We passed by a group of kids all dressed the same with their tight pants and shirts, their short hair with the bangs covering their eyes, facial piercings and way more make up then needed…even on the guys. Non-conformists in the most conforming way.

“Oh. My. Goth.” They whispered as we passed.

My friend leaned over to my ear and said in a low voice, “Holy emo.”

I giggled to myself and coughed after walking through a puff of smoke.

“It’s a fucking emo fest.” I scoffed. I looked over to Maria, “I wonder what they‘ll think of the band.”

Maria shrugged. “It doesn’t really matter what they think.”

I agreed and analyzed my group. The ‘Goth’ crowd.

Maria’s the lead singer and guitarist of the band. She has red, curly hair, green eyes and this serious Goth look to her… most of the time. But, that day she wore all black, as was right I suppose. Brook’s the rhythm guitarist and tends to talk to the audience in between songs. She’s great. Some people think she’s a bit scary but we know better. Then there’s Shane. I’ve known Shane my whole life. She’s the drummer and when she plays she totally gets into it. It’s wicked. Finally, there’s Rayne, Shane’s little brother and their bassist. The boy’s about as queer as they come and we love him more than is logical.

A screamo band went up on stage and started to play; every word about as understandable as calculus to a Neanderthal.

I motioned for my friend Chancy to lean down, so he did.

“I only understood like, one word they said…”

“I know.” He replied.

“It’s annoying.” I huffed.

“5 bucks says they win.”

Sadly, he was probably right. Little did I know, I’d never find out who had won. No one would.

After what seemed like forever, the screaming stopped and I let out a breath.

“Thank god.”

Marc and Sarah, two of my other friends, laughed.

Someone walked by us and I caught the words, “I cry black tears.”

Once they had passed we all broke into laughter. “Oh. My. God.” I was having a good time despite the atmosphere.

A new band started setting up. ‘Bloody Death Whore’, or something like that. It didn’t—nor will it ever—matter to me.

They began playing and a mosh pit immediately started. Emo kid crashing into emo kid. Bored, I turned my back to the stage and joined in on the conversation my friends were having.

Chancy was fake twitching due to the amount of ‘emoness’ and I swear I saw a guy walk by and check him out. Chancey's quite built so I could understand why someone would take interest, but during a fake twitch? Sarah was claiming that we were getting dirty looks. I don’t doubt her to this day.

I felt a headache come over me; most likely from the amount of smoke in the air, and clenched my head. Soon things began to blur and spin. Colours were colliding into each other like a half melted kaleidoscope and the beat from the drums felt as if it was being played on my skull rather than the actual drums.

Suddenly, someone grabbed me from behind and I tripped. The person started dragging me to towards the mosh pit. I soon realized it wasn’t just one person, but three, all dragging me to the very centre of the area in front of the stage.

Shane, Marc, Sarah, Chancy, Brook and everyone looked at me amazed. The two guys quickly followed after with everyone else running behind, but it was too late. I was already on the ground, in the middle of a violent mosh, avoiding feet and falling bodies.

All my friends ran in to get me. Marc punched a guy out and Sarah tackled another as Chancy jumped up and split kicked two guys in the chest. Brook ran over, hopping over fallen bodies and helped me up.

“You alright, Angel?” She asked worried.

I stumbled a bit but there was no time to answer. The so-called mosh had turned into a full out riot.

I backed out slowly, looking around me. How had all this happened? I looked at Marc and Chancy, who were now both beating on the guys who had originally dragged me in there. I put my hand to my head and felt a wet substance. Checking my hand, I noticed blood glistening. My blood.

“Shit!” I shouted.

I got dizzy for a quick second then heard a screech.

Shane was lying on the ground being kicked by a girl of obvious emo origin.

I jumped on the girls back and we both fell to the ground. I kicked her hard in the stomach and shakily stood up, falling again on my ass.

I heard sirens coming from a far and people started to flee. Chancy was running form a wigger with a knife and every single one of my friends was bleeding to some extent. So this was the rage caused by stereotypes. So this was hate. Fucking emos.

Three others like this.

Well. In my mind. That's how the fight started...there was no real fight..however my friends did get threatened by a bunch of wiggers....like 5 times.

I can so relate to this, or at least having imagined something escalate into what it didn't (in a similar scenario). Props to your friends for kicking the shit out of those losers (in your mind or in real life). One of the things I really like about this piece is that I can't tell where the reality ends.

I also think you understand to some extent that "Goth" is just as much of a stereotype as "emo", so there is a potential for the roles to be reversed (although I don't know about an emo kid sticking up for themselves or their friends in any way other than whining).

See here's the weird thing. They're clothing styles are so similar, yet they're like, rival groups. It's so fucked up. Honestly though, the 2 stereotypes act incredibly different..It's weird. Well. Here they do, atleast.

hey.... i know some good screamo bands ! :p

sweet piece, i hate the emo phase. at least goth's been around longer than i've been alive (though you could argue that the Romantics were the first emo kids)

Well, sometimes I think the term "emo" is abused lately.
