Something Real

First off, "Something Real" is just a working title. Second, this is, pretty obviously, a Christian-rock style song. It's about the difficulty of living a dual life; doubting God and feeling far away from Him, but trying to convince yourself and others that everything is okay. It relates to the way people tend to pursue impossible tasks instead of realistic ones, so that they never have to face change or deal with reality -- and even though there's something in our hearts that knows the truth, we kill anybody who tries to stop us from defending our nice, familiar shadows (a la Plato's Cave). I have some idea of music for most of it, so I'll add the chords when I get them all worked out.

(Intro -- four measures, same length as four lines of verse, with the same chord progression as the chorus)

(Verse 1)

The body's silver, the blood is gold,

"Nature's hardest hue to hold"

Empty words, wandering souls,

fractured thoughts and broken hearts

four-measure instrumental

She lives a dual life

Transparencies shielding strife

Eventually, she'll learn to hide

Or she'll tear herself apart

...

She hides behind her smile

Crying all the while

two measures, with percussive lead-in

(Chorus)

All the doubts inside your head

Make you wonder why He's dead

And the words that you have said

Are how you wish you could feel

And you know why He was born

Yet inside your heart is torn

Your soul is drunk, asleep, and worn

Crying "give me something real!"

four measures

(Verse 2)

Why must human nature always be

To hide from possibilities

We never step outside and see

That we defend our prison walls

We pursue our fantasies,

Illogical though they may be

We just hide inside our dreams

And hope Fortune comes when called

...

We hide behind our smiles

Crying all the while

two measures, with percussive lead-in

(Chorus)

All the doubts inside your head

Make you wonder why He's dead

And the words that you have said

Are how you wish you could feel

And you know why He was born

Yet inside your heart is torn

Your soul is drunk, asleep, and worn

Crying "give me something real!"

no instrumental in between

(Bridge)

Crying out, crying out,

Crying "give me something real"

"My, how the world still

Dearly loves a cage!"

Free yourself, free yourself,

Turn around and see what's real

You only know the

Shadows in the cave!

one measure, no percussion, note fades ... possibly modulation and key change, but maybe not ... chorus kicks in again

(Chorus repeat, only different words)

It's more than you, it's more than me

Far beyond our reality

Yet today you just can't see

And you just don't want to feel

Why do you choose to slip away?

Don't you want just one more day?

No, there's nothing I can say

That will give you something real!

4-measure instrumental

(Playout)

Free yourself ...

Free yourself ...

You know what's real.

Not usually a fan of christian rock, to be honest, but I also hadn't heard much actual meaningful stuff other than the repetitive "Praise Him" stuff.

I really like this one. It has meaning. It's also nice to see someone else musical. I'm a music major myself, and your little notes helped me to visualize [not the best term, I'm sure, but whatever] what it would sound like.

Also, it would appear I'm not actually the first to post lyrics. Neat.

I like this a lot, I don't ussually get to hear people admit to doubt in religion but genuine truth is a nice change for me. Can't wait to see more of your work.
