Fitzgerald Dreams

She’s no Daisy Buchanan,
Not haughty and careless
With the hearts of boys she loves,
Not withholding her affections.
She doesn’t like the flash
Of Gatsby,
The restless indifference
Of a debutant.
She prefers
Her heroes like
Sam Clay and Joe Kavalier,
Determined to create
Their own escape.
She imagines herself
Much like F. Scott Fitzgerald.
In her head,
She is the hero and
Anything is possible.
In her head,
She finds him with his
Dark curls bouncing to
The beat of his music.
In her head,
He doesn’t break her heart
and drive her
To her haven of
Chabon, Meno, and Fitzgerald,
Like the boy who last broke her heart.
She knows
That this is all
In her head,
But she can still lose herself
In the dream.
