Chapter 2

Reina closed her eyes and let the winds encase her body. The salt tingled her nostrils in the same way it did her first time out on the sea. She had spent as little time on land as possible since that day, twelve years ago.

As was tradition, her mother raised her until she reached the age of eight, when she would join her father and his crew on a voyage to Thailand. If she enjoyed it, she would continue to shadow her father so as to one day rule the renowned Nynjaaah-Pyrate Dynasty. If not, she would return to her mother, and abdicate the throne to her younger brother; but the moment she set foot on the shyp, she knew she never wanted to leave.

Upon opening her eyes, she heard a cry from the tiny Frenchman in the lookout’s nest.

“Shyp ahead, Monsieur Fumiyoshi! It eez un shyp!” Petit Michon shouted over the waves.

A towering Japanese man approached Reina and bowed. “Warner-sama”

“Fumiyoshi-San” Reina said, returning the bow. “Tetsuya, what’s happening?”

“I am unsure. Petit says he saw something.”

“I’m aware Tetsuya, but I am curious as to what. These waters are generally unoccupied. I do not understand what another shyp is doing in my waters.” Reina replied, shortly. “Get Petit down here, I need to know exactly what he saw. Send Kyne to take his place, for now.”

“But Reina, Kyne is-“

“- Perfectly capable of watching the horizon for a few minutes,” She placed her hand on his shoulder. “He will be fine. He is young, but he will learn”

Tetsuya nodded, and went to shake Petit from his stand and called for Kyne.

Reina smiled as she watched her little brother run to attention the moment his name was called, then shuffle up one of the ladders with surprising speed. He hadn’t yet gained his sea legs, but he would. In time.

Petit slid down the other and rushed towards Reina, “Yes, my queen?”

“I need you to tell me exactly what you saw on the horizon. No shyp is to be on my waters. That is a known fact across the seven seas and I do not believe that has changed.”

“Well, eet was un bateau, un shyp on ze ‘orizon, but, ehm, eet was differant zan any that I ‘ave seen. It ‘ad un brillance to it. It pratiqument shined!”

“Shone?” Reina asked skeptically.

“Oui ma Reine! Comme un étoile!”

“I see. You are dismissed. Relieve Kyne from your positions and return. Vite! Go!”

The little man saluted and hurried towards the ladder, shaking the ladder and cussing in French at Kyne to get the hell out of his spot.

“Tetsuya!” She called, and he came to her side. “What on earth could cause a shyp to shine?”

“Pardon me?” Tetsuya replied, unsure if he had mistranslated the question in his head.

Reina repeated in Japanese. <<What would cause a shyp to shine?>>

Tetsuya blinked, “I do not know.”

“Well,” she said, drawing her sword. “We’re about to find out, aren’t we?”
