People repented. They kissed the ground, they dolled out apologies and other sentiments that they'd neglected to give over the years.
Prisoners were set free and free men imprisoned themselves in their houses, as if the earthquake drills they'd learned in first grade could save them now.
The beggars ceased begging and ran wildly through the stores eating food right off the shelves as they pleased. No clerk argued this as they abandoned their positions to head home.
The rich and powerful packed important documents and money in briefcases as they made phone calls to other Very Important People.
The mothers held their children's hands as they escorted them into basements.
The fathers firm expressions maintained a forced calm but their eyes held the same terror as their son's.
Meanwhile a boy and girl watched all the people acting only on instinct, frantically trying to preserve what was not in their control. They recognized this as they stood on the highest rooftop overlooking the city.
The only two that could see past the senselessness of it all, how this had been coming all along, how it didn't really matter and that although the earth was traveling at light speed towards its demise, it's never as close or far or real as it seems.
They sat with their feet dangling off the roof, thankful that they hadn't gone to work that day.
