Names.
« on: May 30, 2007, 02:55:03 pm »
I figured we could have a thread with useful references that anyone can use if they are stuck on naming a character.

I generally use 20,000 Names.
http://www.20000-names.com/

http://www.babynames.com/

That one has come in handy on several occasions, as well.

I like naming characters wierd things.
Autote Grade, the paranoid, obsessive drug addict.
Woah, I need to use that character in a piece now.

use the names of people who spam you. They have the wierdest shit... "Spike_in_da_house" becomes Spike House, and so on.

I usually go with the Romeo and Juliet approach with naming. Like Mercutio and Benvolio and Tybalt (ok so that last one wasn't so much).

or I just pick a name from my name hat.

yes I have one.

Most of them are names suggested or entered by my friends.

hah. Cyrus Frederick Stanantanan the Fith, Esquire. Yet to use that one.

I used that 20000 names site to help me with the narrator's name in my BS piece, "Devil".

I guess it's kinda useful...

i normally use whatever name generator pops up when i google something like 'names' or 'baby names'  i normally pick a gender, first letter and a nationality or meaning and go from there. so i might want a celtic boy's name that starts with the letter A.

so i plug in my search, choose a few i like, perhaps Aiden, Airell, Arlen, and Artan and narrow them down based on meaning. perhaps my scotsman has a fiery temper and so perhaps i would choose the name Aiden because it means fire. i use this for every character i've ever named. i'm pretty ridiculous i guess....

I come up with names as I write a piece, and make them appropriate to the character, but name generators or sites are useful as a point of reference.

Edit: 500th post, woohoo!

I use random words I know like 'Videre' is Latin for 'to see'
and words that relate to characters from other languages.
shizz like that

I think I'm like the only person here who actually enjoys naming characters  8)

I love naming characters.  It just slows me down a lot, 'cuz I'll be sitting there thinking of a name.  If I'm lucky, I'll have already thought up the character a long time ago and have had several days to think of a name before I have to write anything.

Otherwise, I'll just be sitting there for about half an hour or more just trying to come up with a name.  It's really fun, but kinda hard unless I have a certain concept in mind.

I either name characters after friends, generic names, characters in songs, or historical/literary figures.  or the occasional artist.
