Last book you read?
« on: April 10, 2007, 12:38:19 pm »
We have a "What are you listening to right now?" thread, so why not a "Last book you read?" thread!

I know we probably read less than we listen to music, though.

My last was Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess. It was good, for a book a bought because it has a pretty cover.

Well, I'm in the middle of Dangerous Liaisons.  Which I probably spelled wrong.  OH WELL.

Huh.  I want to say the last book I read was Washington Square by Henry James, but I'm pretty sure there was something after that.  HMMM...I'll have to try and remember.

I tend to read 104334797 books at once so it's hard for me to keep track.  Haha.

Huh.  I think I thought of the actual last book I read.  It was Courtesan by Diane Haegar.  I believe that's how her last name is spelled...

If you like historical nonfiction (though I think a few parts were probably fictionalized a WEE bit, haha) it's a really, really entertaining read.  It takes place during the reigns of two different kings of France, Francois I and Henri II.  During Francois I's reign, a woman who was cast out of court named Diane de Poitiers was invited to return.  And she ends up falling for/becoming the mistress of his son, Henri, who eventually married Catherine de Medici...anyway, the factual stuff is fascinating, and the fact that the end is true amazes me and breaks my heart.  Basically, Henri II suffered one of the most tragically horrible deaths I've ever heard of in my life.

And it seriously HAPPENED.  Oh emm gee.

I recommend it.  It's a very good love story, if you like that sort of thing, and I couldn't stop reading it.  After I finished it, I did a bit of research into the reigns of Francois I and Henri II.  Interesting stuff, and the book gets most of it right.

Well...the book is based mostly in non-fiction.  As in, the actual events of the story truly did happen (and, I might mention, they're truly fascinating).  But things like dialogue and such are fudged, of course.

So I think if there was ever a category, it would have to be called historical nonfiction.  Because historical fiction seems to imply that the entire story is fiction, while that's not necessarily true of the book Courtesan.  Things the author couldn't possibly know are, of course, fictionalized, but for the most part, the basic plot points are historical fact.

Just rambling...ha.
